Hospice Care NJ

23 January 2012

Hospices play a vital role in providing palliative care for those who are terminally ill. Palliative care is defined as a category of medical treatment that seeks to lessen the severity of disease, as opposed to striving to cure or reverse the effects of illness. Hospice care can be provided in a residential home or at the patient’s own home; importantly, the choice lies with the patient themselves.

Hospice care offers patients a peaceful and dignified way to live out their remaining few months in the presence of their family and friends. The level of care provided also reduces the strain placed on loved ones at such an anxious time. It is not uncommon for terminally ill patients to feel that that they are a burden to their relatives.

Patients who are receiving hospice care are generally expected to have less than six months to live. A hospice offers patients the opportunity to fully live their remaining days. A large percentage of people would prefer to die in their own home, in the presence of their loved ones. Hospice professional medical and caring staff can help the patient to feel comfortable and secure. Death is generally perceived as being a lonely and painful experience. Hospice care brings dignity and comfort to the terminal patient.

Hospice care can also relieve the workload from overstretched hospitals, freeing up beds that would otherwise be occupied. The wider availability of beds, in turn, reduces waiting lists for patients awaiting major operations and other forms of medical treatment.
